As we get out of the holiday season, let us again remind ourselves why we are here. I don’t mean “why are we here” or “the meaning of life” or anything like that. I mean why are we in the Christmas season again. How many times do we fly through the season with our day-planners (that would be me) with everything timed out to the last minute of the last family member getting back on the plane, only to sit down on January 2nd and take a deep breath, realizing just too late that yet another Christmas flew by before we could enjoy it?
Well, here’s a thought…a few years ago, my wife and I decided to ditch the presents to each other. Our son was just too young to care and we thought we would focus only on Jesus. Now I am not saying this is Scriptural. I am just sharing the truth that for one year, it was a nice break. We bought each other one present only with the guideline that it had something to do with the birth of the Christ. We thought that it would teach us some grand truth of our faith and it did, but not what we had expected.
It showed very quickly how much the Christmas season is a mess for a lot of people. We just do too much and get too busy to enjoy it. For us, we had to slow down just to see that, realizing that when you are going extremely fast, you can’t even see what you are missing. Each person has their own tolerance of what is “too much”, but the important thing to realize where that tolerance level is, and then stay below it. Take time to pray and worship and enjoy Jesus through the season celebrating His birth. We can be busy, as long as we can balance it with our inner lives. We should roll into January refreshed, not wiped out. You pray for me and I’ll pray for you and let’s remember the reason for the season is Jesus! Pray on!
