As we gear up for 2006, let's stop and think for a moment about how we prepare our days and weeks, our time and circumstance. When you get in a car and start the engine, what is the first thing you do before you pull out? How about when you are about to get up in front of a bunch of people to speak? Or how about when you get ready for bed? As you move into 2006, are you getting ready?
Now you may know where I am going here, but that is only part of the issue. You see, it is easy to say things like "you need to pray each day so you are on God's page, and in His will." Or "put on your armor each day, so you can fight the good fight." Both of these points are good and well-heeded, but that is not where I am going either.
My point today is this: if I hug my wife because I am married to her and I want her to know that I care, that is one thing, and a good idea at that! But, if I hug my wife, because I love her so much that I cannot live one minute longer without that hug, that is something else. You see, although I think that God loves our discipline and commitment to prayer, and honors it, I wonder how much more He adores our prayers that truly come forth without any will. In other words, when we long to be with Him as soon as we wake and all day and night and don't have to "make" ourselves find time for prayer. Now if you are like me, then you just don't do that as often as you like, but that is what new years are about, right?
Pray on!
