Prayer: Is it important?

If God is Sovreign, why should we pray? If He is in control of everything anyway, what really is the point of prayer. While lengthy dissertations could only scratch the surface of what prayer is, and what it’s for, let this little note encourage you. Prayer, according to the Westminster Shorter Catechism, is “an offering up of our desires to God, for things agreeable to his will, in the name of Christ, with confession of our sins, and thankful acknowledgment of his mercies.” While not theologians, we all need to understand basic concepts of prayer and learn to use it effectively. Remember that God is not a surplus store, to be sought out when our needs must be met, although He loves to fulfill our desires according to His will. And He is not about repetitive kudos, although He is worthy of them all! No, our Lord and Master is all about personal relationship. A deep, devoted love that flows from Him to us and back again. Only when we desire Him more than anything else, can we praise openly, thank honestly, intercede purposely, confess heartfully, and request willingly. This is prayer.
