Music & Worship
Song Of The Week

Worship at New Life is how we connect with God as a large group. Our music, set in a contemporary environment while maintaining a great reverence for the grand traditions of Christianity, provide a setting for us to worship God and allow the Holy Spirit to get our hearts prepared to hear the Word of God. We do our best each and every week to combine great, singable music with the proper attitudes of respectful worship to glorify God. On this page, we will periodically post interesting information about the stories behind various contemporary songs as well as hymns of the faith. If you have any music-related questions or suggestions, please let Joe know!

A Mighty Fortress is Our God
Reformation Through Song
top

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper he amid the flood of mortal ills prevaling. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; his craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal.

2. Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right man on our side, the man of God's own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he; Lord Sabbaoth, his name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle.

3. And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us. The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure; one little word shall fell him.

4. That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth; the Spirit and the gifts are ours, thru him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; the body they may kill; God's truth abideth still; his kingdom is forever.

No other hymn stands higher as the clarion call of the reformation as “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.: Written in both word and music by the former monk, Martin Luther (November 10, 1483 – February 18, 1546), this battle cry has been sung by many a Christian faced with dire prospects and proclaimed loudly throughout history. Without getting into the reformation itself, it can be noted that this hymn has multiple theories on when it was written and even the authorship of the tune has been debated.
