Team Effort 2009
Leading through Service

Article by Jan Stevenson
Going on a mission trip can certainly test you. But being outfitted with the Word of God in your heart, ready for any kind of assignment, and being willing to serve each other as a team in service to the Lord, can lead to awesome results. Be ready for something that’s very different and out of your comfort zone. I went along on the mission trip to Georgia as a chaperone for the teen girls. Oh, yes that was a really tough job. They were excellent! Well, sure there was the little thing about “lights out” at 10:30 PM…but they managed pretty well. I mean, come on, they are teenagers, 4 of them, all in the same room with, well, teenage things that just gotta be done before “lights out.” The team had memorized Philippians 2:1-11 before we left. I don’t know if they realized it, but I watched them live out the verses they had learned. They displayed the mind of Christ by willingly doing what was assigned, and even sat aside what they preferred to do in order to meet the needs of others by volunteering to help out in various projects. Some helped set up chairs for the worship services, some made lunches, some lugged huge water jugs and some cleaned the bathrooms and shower stalls. As a team we painted picnic tables, played with kids, made flower beds, picked up trash, weeded, mulched, raked leaves, lugged water, dragged piles of dried limbs and bushes that snapped, poked, scratched and downright refused to be dragged across the field. It was with that Christ-like, servant attitude, that the team was able to accomplish many tasks! No one was left out of the mix and that was what impressed me most. The teens included each other in all their activities and we all enjoyed each other’s company. As a team we also spent time seeing the sights, eating out, playing soccer, banana grams, volleyball, tree climbing, and basketball. The whole team got involved in a new game called “Spider Intervention.” The goal of this game was to find and get rid of a spider who was accosting a couple of girls. I’m sure that spider will never be the same, wherever he is! When it came time to leave it was hardest on the teens. They had developed friendships among themselves and with the Team Effort staff. Saying goodbye was tough. But even as many good times must come to an end, the memories linger. And we know that God has many more incredible times planned for the Mission Team. Come, join us on the next trip! You will never regret it. Thank you for making it possible for us to go, and especially for your prayers!
